I am interested in what is communicated through art. I have always loved the written word and poetry, but I understand art as something that is able to reach beyond language into something slightly beyond logical comprehension. I believe that we are able to absorb information and concepts from an image by evoking the intuitive part of the intellect.

Invocation 1, is a poem that I wrote simultaneously to creating a symbolic alphabet. In essence the poem is study of our human longing for wholeness and sense of unity. The poem is performed through gestures and movement alone.

Using my own body as a tool of communication, I have created a language made up of symbolic gesture and form. Each letter is represented by a single posture. Each letter position is captured in a photographic image. Words and sentences are then built up using each image/letter, and put into a sequence that follows the fluidity and rhythm of the poem itself.

The poem is not written out in wording, but is encoded within the structure of the video file itself. A comprehensive image dictionary can be shown along side the video performance, however deciphering the text is not the intention of the work. The poem’s exact wording is deliberately obscured. The performance speaks in metaphors and symbols with the hope that that essence of what is trying to be communicated may be understood.
