WORLDS WITHIN

DESCRIPTION

  • Worlds within are a series of seven paintings, made during my residency in the Yucatan in Mexico. Inspired by and exploring the natural materials and colours with which I was surrounded, I created a selection of natural dyes from a variety of plant materials such as berries, herbs, spices, vegetables and algae. Using a silk weave cotton fabric I have applied my plant dyes in rectangular layers to create a kind of tunnel or doorway in to the centre of the painting.

The nature of the plant-based materials is to slightly fade after it’s first application, leaving a subtle subdued pallet of organic hues. The works are the remnants of an orchestrated process that is both incredibly precise and organically unpredictable. Although structurally geometric, the plant pigments seem alive, they seep, bleed and distort from the line into fluid forms, the colours merging and emerging out of one and other. The fine, almost transparent silk fabric, and delicate hues have an ephemeral like quality, yet the solid purple cabbage blues, camomile yellow and raspberry reds ground then in nature.

With this series of paintings my engagement with natural materials is informed by an inner journey and process: the paintings aim to transport the viewer to the borderline where materiality gives way to the inner qualities of nature. Substance is reduced to frequency and vibration and each composition becomes a tunnel or doorway into a different tonal frequency, which is reflected in the work’s title. Each works resonates with a tonal frequency that allows the viewers experience to merge the bodies interior and exterior spaces. Stressing the direct connection between the bodies physical and psychological dimension, the pure geometric abstract paintings aim to transform into sensory explorations.
