Tanja Wagner gallery has accepted the “Discovery” invitation of the Gallery Weekend to show a position that has never been presented in the gallery. Rachel Garrard, a British painter and sculptor born in 1984, lives partially in Mexico. On her unprimed canvases she applies self-made pigments, which she extracts from stones, which gives her painting a soft powderiness and earthiness. But the motifs are clear forms, some of which have an effect on hieroglyphics, crop circles or systems of signs from a distant culture that have long since disappeared. As a child, the artist says, she was able to find her way into a meditative state in which she saw these moving forms in front of her. Much of which she has recorded, and later processed into forms that continue throughout her art. Some of the paintings are reminiscent of diagrams, where as others seem to express a certain emotions or state of being, a nebulous indescribability and a very clearly defined formal language. As the daughter of scientists, she says she has always tried to balance the rational inquiry with visionary mediations. This balance between un decodable and precision is what really makes Rachel Garrard one Discovery.
